Background Information:

Planet Earth is showing signs of wear and tear which we can't ignore and these environmental changes are influencing the way we think and act. The motivation behind the Steampunk Dalek Roadshow is to inspire our future decision makers. Schools are leading the way to educate a generation of globally conscious and environmentally informed young citizens. The Steampunk Dalek Roadshow is timely and relevant as important decisions to be made by government, industries and communities, today and in the future, will be expected to make sustainability a priority.

Vince's livelihood is a unique example of sustainably smart living. An artist, an inventor and an ambassador for 'waste-wise' thinking, Vince's art is primarily created from reclaimed materials. The inception of an art piece might begin with an observation of an interesting or familiar form or simply the availability of used materials. Collecting the reclaimed materials is a continuous 'treasure hunt', sometimes these treasures are sourced from members of his local community. People are enthusiastic to contribute to an artistic endeavour which shows how art can connect a community and it is also a sign that we don't like to see things go to waste.

"However, long before our growing levels of waste became an environmental concern, recycling was a part of every day life. Resources were not as readily available as they are today so people valued them and reused materials where ever possible. The history of recycling shows that it is not a fad of modern society, but something that reflects our inner desire to ‘do more with less"- Planet ark

Steampunk is an artistic style inspired by steam-powered technology and Victorian futurism. New inventions, industrial machinery, transport and electricity are some of the things that revolutionised the world in the 19th century. People started thinking about the future in a different way or it might be truer to say that people started wondering what the world would be like in the future for the very first time. Steampunk is a modern art movement that reflects new exploration of imagination and huge attitude shift in the Victorian era during a prolific time in the evolution of technology.

The Steampunk Dalek is a significant art piece for Vince, it embraces the marriage of classic period materials with an earthy palette of brass, copper, leather and wood, stylised in a mechanical and ornate design. Launched at the Darlington Festival in 2016, the Steampunk Dalek has rolled amongst Perth’s street festivals and impressed audiences of all ages.

The Steampunk Team recognises that schools are leaders in our communities, paving the way for environmentally conscious changes like waste-wise schools, recycling programs, worm farming, veggie gardens and more. Practising waste-wise habits is one way we can reduce the amount of waste but what if we didn't produce so much waste in the first place by considering what our needs really are. During the Steampunk Dalek Roadshow, Vince will challenge the audience with some tough facts and talk about making better informed purchasing decisions. For example, we can support businesses and manufacturers whose products or manufacturing processes are environmentally friendly. An example of how consumers can make a difference is the boycott on manufacturers of palm oil. Some of these companies used unsustainable practices that have resulted in the destruction of precious ecosystems that provide homes for animals like the orangutans. The youth of today can change the world by making wise decisions about what they spend their money on!

How does your school care for our planet? Is your school a waste-wise school? Let us know what programs are implemented at your school, we would love to know. Host an incursion and the Steampunk Dalek will be delighted to reinforce your school's objectives to support the cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability.
